Hi!

***

He took the bucket, he pushed back his hat, and he squatted by the cow to milk her.

And that cow hunched herself and kicked Pa flat on his back.

***

1. What does that sentence, "And that cow hunched herself and kicked Pa flat on his back." mean?

Does it mean that (1) the cow kicked Pa right on Pa's back or does it mean that (2) the cow kicked Pa and Pa fell on his back on the ground?

Which should be the correct understanding of the sentence?

2. Does "Cow hunched herself" mean that the cow made her back round?

1. Your second interpretation is right.

2. Yes, as she prepared for kicking.
