I'm Korean. I live in Seoul, South Korea.

I do not speak English well, so please forgive my clumsy expression.

I have carried out a kind of 'English Test'  last month(January, 2007),

and one question is making a confusion, because anyone can't make sure what the correct answer is.

I was confused too.

Belows are the question and answers.

---------------------

Chamber Upgrades Website

Dunston Chamber of Commerce completed its database upgrade project yesterday when it announced a new feature allowing Chamber of Commerce members to search an extensive database of members.

"Though our old website offered useful information for local business it did not make it easy for one company to learn about another." said Anton Szabo, a membership director.

"But now, with this database upgrade if a member company is looking for a tax consultant for example, the new website can identify local consulting firms, provide current contact information, even link to their websites.

I applaud the Chamber's development committee, which came up with the idea consistent with the mission of the upgrade.

A member business, Gossan Design on Sand Road, has been selected to provide editorialand technical support for the website.

While access to the business database is restricted to members with a password the remaining site content continues to be available to the general public.

As in the past all visitors have access to the online newsletter, regional events calendar and information on Chamber membership as well as to local employment opportunity listings.

     ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

159. What is stated about the database?

(A) It is available only to members.

(B) It was suggested by Gossan Design.

(C) It includes local job listings.

(D) It will be upgraded soon.

---------------------------------------------

Some people think answer A is the correct answer. but others think C is the correct answer.

This English Test does not povide correct answers openly; only provieds test results just like score.

Please help me, and Many Korean applicants of that test.

They're looking forward your answers, and I am.

While access to the business database is restricted to members with a password the remaining site content continues to be available to the general public.

As in the past (C1) all visitors have access to the online newsletter, regional events calendar and information on Chamber membership (C2) as well as to local employment opportunity listings.

159. What is stated about the database?

(A) It is available only to members.   See the part in blue. I think this is the right one.

(B) It was suggested by Gossan Design. No, he was the one who was selected to provide technical support. See the highlighted point B

(C) It includes local job listings. No, I think those are on the public part of the website, not part of the database, since all visitors have access to local employment opportunity listings, while the database can only be accessed by members. See C1 and C2.

(D) It will be upgraded soon. They say it was completed "yesterday", it's already upgraded. See point D.

Wait for some better advice though Smile [:)]

Arabic is the best
Kim_Inhwa  #333879  Tue, 27 Feb 07 08:56 PM

Hello, Reham_ss

In Korea, English skill is very important factor to SURVIVE in a extremely competitive society.

In my university in Seoul, students who don't have TOEIC point over 650~700 NEVER be accepted to get a diploma.

No exception.

Irrespective of a special subject of study, all students must satisfy that English test standard.

Moreover, anyone who don't have TOEIC point over 900, in fact, is not allowed to apply for public enterprise.

I study English to survive. but Arabic is not necessary to live in my country.

Where are you from, Reham_ss? What city?

In Seoul, There are very very few language schools that teaches Arabic languages to the public.

To many Koreans, it is too arduous work to study English so they  have no time, no composure of mind to study other languages.

Hi again Kim,
what you say is interesting, anyway I knew that in Asian countries English is "vital" if you want to study at accademic level. But I guess that's not only true of your part of the world, because English is becoming of extreme importance even here, when it comes to everything related to technology, computer science, or even economics. Let's say that nowadays if you don't know English at an acceptable level "you won't end up anywhere".
Anyway, good luck, and keep on studying. Reaching a good level of English is not impossible, it just takes time. Smile [:)]

Thank you again, Kooyeen.

I posted your two replies to my Korean fellows who are studying English.

They have been satisfied with your considerate answers. and saying 'Thank you'.

Although I'm a student in the case of studying English, I have worked as a Man's wear designer in Seoul.

We produce clothes in China.

Many garment making workshops or factories of  Korean enterprises are located in Chinese cities just as Qingdao.

We are Korean and They are Chinese. But they don't speak Korean language. We are not fluent in Chinese.

Consequently, the Koreans and the Chineses usually communicate each other in English.

English communication ability is essential to take care of my business.

Thank you again. I became more courageous after I read your answer.

Dear Kim,

First of all I must say your English is fantastic an you needn't apologise

Now for the question . The points clearly stated in the passage are

1    The database can only be seen by members

2    Any visitor can see the rest of the website

3    Any visitor can see local job listings

Kim, if any visitor can see local job listings, they must definitely NOT be in the database (look at points 1 and 2)

Therefore A is the only correct choice.
