Police said 10 Taleban militants were killed late on Friday when a roadside bomb they were trying to plant, near the town of Musa Qala, exploded.

This is an extract from BBC website. Which time frame does "late on Friday" indicate? Can I say "early on Friday"? If yes, which time frame will it refer to? Thanks

Late on Friday = the latter part of Friday evening/night.

Early on Friday = any time from 00:00 to about 09:00, although the end of this period is subjective.

You can say:

Late in the day  = towards the end of the day
Later in the day = at any point in time after now

Early in the day = towards the start of the day
Earlier in the day = at any point of time before now.
