When pound is used as a unit of weight, it is abbreviated as lb. When it is used as a unit of money, it is abgreviated like a cursive capital L.

What are the original words for lb, and L?

[Q] From Andrea: “Why are pounds, when used as a weight, abbreviated lbs?”

Angel [A] The origin is in the Latin word libra, which could mean both balance scales (hence the symbol for the astrological sign Libra, which was named after a constellation that was thought to resemble scales) and also a pound weight, for which the full expression was libra pondo, the second word being the origin of our pound.

5 lbs. There is a new TV series being planned for 2007 season, and its title is "3 lbs."
