Hi:

I checked the meaning of the word in my dictionary, and it says "too old"

I think if someone's too old, he'll lose his teeth, how could it be "long in the tooth"?Big Smile [:D]

I've got my answer later:

When horses get old, their gums recede.  (In other words, the gums don't cover as much of the teeth as they did before.)  This makes the teeth look longer.
