I always thought it was antidisestablismentunitariumism, however I don't have a clue what it means. I did use this in a debate in high school. TO DEBATE IS GREAT

I think no one knows what the longest word actually is. It could be fought over. And if there was of such a word, no one would know it means.
Good luck trying to find it!!!!!

My vote'd be:
antidisestablishmentarianistic (30 letters)
Some (crassly! I might add) tack on "ally" at the end of the word, bringing it up to 34 letters, but the resulting word is made up. But look it up; it's a real word!!
I didn't have a chance to read all the posts, but got here from a Yahoo! page...apologies if this word has already been suggested.

Yeah, but that's just a string of amino acids strung together. Should I read you the entire human genome?

After much ballyhoo, conjecture, experienced and educated attempts to identify the longest English word, try this one on for size: anticontraconvertidebenturalarbitrigenophobicide-48 letters. It has as much validity as any of the others. Do you have any idea as to the meaning?

That's not fair, the letters between the first and last letters in "smiles" are each three blocks long.
