I'm a guy from Sweden. I find linguistics in its most theoretical forms to be very interesting. I would like to learn everything there is to know about it, and I hope that I am someday going to make my own contributions to the science. Perhaps I could work on relating isolate languages to language families. I have a burning interest for history and learning about other cultures as well. Being like Jean-François Champollion would be a great aim!

I would like to know, where can I find the toughest, most difficult, advanced whatsoever linguist education in the world? I have been trying to search the Internet without much success and I would appreciate it if you could list a few universities that are widely acknowledged to have the best linguistic educations. This is such a burning interest for me, and I would be willing to study it all the time.

Hello, Zewu !
?? :)
I have no idea!
Could you specify your interest more in detail?

Anyway, you should read a considerable amount of literature and undersatand its essence all by yourself.
In this process you would find somebody worthy of your esteem ... now it's not difficult at all to contact him if you want.
You can find the best teachers, who would give appropiate advices, and best place to learn linguistics, everywhere in the world.

This is what I thought first of all. I hope other members would give you more concrete advices.

Welcome to EnglishForums, Zewu!
Please feel free here! Nice to meet you. Roro

Zewu,

MIT teaches linguistics and philosophy together. They also have Open Course Ware -- that is, the contents of the courses are available on-line for free. You could learn a lot about linguists and see if MIT's approach is what you are looking for.

Hi Zewu from Sweden, welcome to the forums,

Actually, if you want to select your university you have to limit yourself to one thing that you like the most. Generally, American universities are a bit ahead of their Euroupean counterparts, that's because the theories usually are born and developed bu the linguists who teach there. You can have a look at the renown professors or teachers to say what's the school and interests of that department. For example, Chomsky is a main figure at MIT, so they focus more on generative grammar, and philosophy as mentioned here earlier. Sag is teaching at Stanford, so I guess HPSG is prominent. Edinburugh along with a German university that I do not remember its name are famous for computtional linguistics. There were lots of researches done by German linguistics on linking the Indo-Euroupean languages before, I'm not sure about now. And lots of work on isolated languages were done in the US decades ago, most probably there are some remaining from that tradition. And you can leave your question to be answered by a linguist here: [link]

As you'll see on the link, there are other useful information can be found there. Have a lookk at this, for example:

Good luck with your studies,

Hi Zewu,

I also have a great interest in linguistics and after searching for the best course I have found it to be provided by the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, UK. They offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Linguistics.[link] Let me know if you find this is what you are looking for. with best wishes,

Louise
