Literally 'cut off'. I think it comes from 'the self-
control is cut off', thus 'lose temper'.
'Lose one's temper' is a traditional normal expression
I think. Is there any more colloquial expression for that?

Lose one's temper is the colloquial expression for that. If someone goes realy mad we say they have lost control.
