Hi Persona Grata,

According to my dictionary, a pet is an animal which is kept in the home as a companion and treated affectionately. In this case, I think to make a good pet is the same as to be a good pet or to be a pet that the owner loves. I think it could also mean that the pet behaves well and causes little trouble to the owner.     I hope this helps.

Best wishes,
Peaceblinkfriend

P.S I think people usually say 'I don't understand' instead of 'I can't understand' in this case.

Success - it is not the position where you are standing, but which direction you are going.

You are welcome, Persona Grata. It feels great knowing that you are helping someone.Smile [:)]

To be honest with you, I am not a 100% sure about the differences between 'I can't understand' and 'I don't understand'. I might not even be correct. I don't want to give you the wrong explanation so I  should leave this to someone else. I am sorry.

Best wishes,
Peaceblinkfriend

P.S You should say either "What are the differences between..." or "What is the difference between..." . I think you would usually say 'Can I ask you one more question?' Although I am quite sure you could also say 'Can I ask one more question?'

Hi, Persona Grata.  "Make" is this sense does mean "be" or "become", not "manufacture."  "Rabbits make good pets; grizzly bears don't make good pets."  You might also hear something like "I think you would make a good doctor."

Literally, "I don't understand" means simply "I don't understand," but "I can't understand" means "I am not capable of understanding. -- it is impossible for me to understand."  Often, though, people would say "I can't understand" as a more emphatic version of "I don't understand" -- especially to express annoyance or exasperation.  "I can't understand how you can lose you car keys every single morining!!"  It indicates that you have tried and tried  to understand, but you still don't understand.
