Guys, remember in Father of the Bride, when George was visiting his future in-laws with Nina and John said they shouldn't say whether the kids were rushing things, George said, "Suddenly he was making too much sense for me". What does that mean? That 1) what John said was nonsense to George, or that 2) George felt trapped because John's word conveyed a lot of sense?

I thought it would be number (1) but I need to be sure now because I'm subtitling the movie. Thanks a million!

Could you re-post it with John's exact words so we can get the real context?

The name says it all.

Sure. Here it is (you'll find it toward the end of the dialogue below)... And thanks! (Uh...just ignore the spelling mistakes in the script).

JOHN
How did you...uh...take the news, George?

GEORGE
Me?  Uh, truthfully, I was a little surprised.

JOHN
I was shocked.

GEORGE
So was I.

JOHN
After all, they'd only known each other a few months.

GEORGE
Exactly.  And Annie is just finishing up school.

JOHN
Absolutely.  Oh, believe me, I tossed and turned over this one,
but...the bottom line is, they're in love.  They over twenty-one, and
whether they're rushing into this or not is maybe not for us to say.

GEORGE
(VO)
Right.  Not for us to say.  We're only their parents.  I was just about
to say these very words out loud when he hit me with...

JOHN
Yes, sooner or later you just have to let your kids go and hope you
brought 'em up right.  George...Nina...Darling.

GEORGE
(VO)
This guy was making a little too much sense for me.  Suddenly, my shirt
collar felt like it was starting to strangle me.

IMO
This guy was talking too much about feelings for me.  Suddenly, my shirt
collar felt like it was starting to strangle me.

"Father of the bride". Nice movie :-)

"This guy was making a little too much sense for me."

In the context of this scene, I'd say that George knows that John is correct but doesn't want to admit it to himself.

John has cornered him with a statement that he'd rather not answer. He's in denial.

So yes, I think he's feeling trapped, hence the 'strangle' part.

Yes, I'd agree with that interpretation.
