Here is a link that I believe is a much more reliable source for those of you who are wondering if margarine really is only one molecule different from plastic.
It is written by a professor of chemistry. I cross checked to be certain that this man was real, and had actual certifications. He does, and you can do the same simply by searching his name on the internet. I heard this same rumor myself, one should really check into what they're reading, especially on the internet where so much information is completely unreliable.

Thank you.

Margarine was NOT originally made for turkey fattening but for people in France

It's all on wikapedia

In 1869 Emperor Louis Napoleon III of France offered a prize to anyone who could make a satisfactory substitute for butter, suitable for use by the armed forces and the lower classes.[1] French chemist Hippolyte Mège-Mouriés invented a substance he called oleomargarine, the name of which became shortened to the trade name "Margarine". Mège-Mouriés patented the concept in 1869 and expanded his initial manufacturing operation from France but had little commercial success. In 1871, he sold the patent to the Dutch company Jurgens, now part of Unilever.[2]
