Welcome to EnglishForums.

Unfortunately, your request is too broad to answer in a forum post. These kinds of expressions have many meanings and many uses. They deal with necessity, possibility, ability, advisability, probability, permission, obligation, willingness, refusal, futurity, and on and on!

Many books have been written on the subject of English modals. I recommend using the Internet to locate a few books on the subject of modal verbs in English. You might also try a library.

It won't be possible to learn all of their uses all at once. It will take quite a long time to master them, so you will need to be patient.

That said, here's a few basic facts:

The modals are: will, would, shall, should, can, could, may, might, and must.
They never change the way other verbs do. They don't add "s" or "ed".
They are followed by a bare infinitive or by "have" and a past participle.

What is the most important diference betwen can and could?
CalifJim  +  76853 Sat, 26 Feb 05 04:36 PM
Guest,

There is no one right answer to this question. In my opinion, the most important difference is that "can" is rarely followed by "have" + past participle while "could" regularly does so.

Also, in a main clause, "can" can give permission while "could" cannot.

You can go now. (This can be used to mean "You are permitted to go now".)
You could go now. (This can be used to mean "One of your alternatives is to go now".)

There may be many more answers from different posters.

When will I use would and When could?

Generally "would" is used to express desire. For example

I would like to ask you a question.

I would love to go there.

On the other hand "could" is used express capability or permission. For example

I could go there. ( I have everything needed to go there. I have capability to go there. I am allowed to go there). The meaning changes slighly based on the situation we are referring to.
