When browsing a friend's facebook profile, I noticed that under a photo, he had written "My friend and I".

Should "I" not be replaced by "me"?

Thanks!

I is the more formal version using the subject from (I: part of subject):

My friend and I are here in this picture.

Or you could think of:

This picture includes my friend and me.

(me: part of direct object)

It depends what complete sentence he had in mind, also on the degree of formality.

You can take it the way Marius took it, that is, both "I" and "me" could be considered prescriptively grammatical. Or you can just take it the way some native speakers (or "a lot of native speakers", depending on the point of view) take it. They just use "me" and "I" interchangeably when in the form of "Someone and I" or "Someone and me", so both of them are the same and they mean:
This is my friend and I
This is my friend and me.

Whether using "I" that way is wrong or not depends on the context and on your dialect. Smile
