That is the job of the media, to hold you accountable, but this isn't about the media, it's about the American people, many of whom voted for you because of what you said during the campaign, and they have a right to know which of those things you meant and which you didn't.

Apparently, as you made clear Monday, you didn't mean what you said about Hillary Clinton. So what else didn't you mean?

Does 'didn't mean what you said about Hillary Clinton' mean that what he said about Hillary Clinton was not necessarily 100% true or he was not 100% sure about that, or he didn't think so at all even if he said that?

When you say something that you don't mean, you are speaking insincerely.

So it comes to "he didn't think so at all" even though he said it.  What he said was for show -- to make the right impression on the right people at the time.

The meaning of " - - didn't mean what you said - - -" depends on what you said.  Does this refer to some specific comment?  -    everything he said about her? Without meaning to be partisan, this is really a cheap shot.  It's a lawyer's trick. It's the media [who are] dissing the American people by insincere tactics like this.

It's the reporter who says, "You didn't mean what you said," not [Obama].  He's just fishing.

I completely agree with CJ's reply, by the way.  There's just no point in trying to be specific about the meaning of something like this. I'm sure the reporter would be delighted if half the people who heard him thought he was calling Obama a liar.

Obviously the reporter would claim he meant, "How can you say she's capabable of being Secretary of State and incapable of being President?"  It's nothing but a cheap insult.

It's Obama who doesn' t care about a cheap shot and looks to more important things.
By the way, the reporter is a woman.Smile

Didn't is the shortened version of did not. So didn't mean is did not mean.
