Sometimes I see TV shows or movies with some funny titles I wonder what do they mean to native English speakers. Two examples:

A scanner darkly (movie)

Wire in the blood (series)

A scanner darkly is a reference to the phrase 'through a glass darkly'- updated for a sci-fi movie.

from wikipedia

Through A Glass Darkly is an abbreviated form of a much-quoted phrase from the Christian New Testament in 1 Corinthians 13. The phrase is interpreted to mean that humans have an imperfect perception of reality

It's been used throughout literature and entertainment for centuries to place emphasis on perspective.

Wire in the blood, I think, is a veiled reference to the phrase 'ghost in the machine'

from wikipedia

The ghost in the machine is British philosopher Gilbert Ryle's derogatory description for René Descartes' mind-body dualism. The phrase was introduced in Ryle's book The Concept of Mind, written in 1949, to highlight the perceived absurdity of dualist systems like Descartes' where mental activity carries on in parallel to physical action, but where their means of interaction are unknown or, at best, speculative.

Hope that helps
