Dear Teacher,

            There is a sentence:

This tournament (golf) next year is a week after the Shanghai (HSBC Champions) tournament...

What's the meaning of "week' in the sentence?  How long?  Please explain the meaning of the sentence.  Thank you.

Not necessarily 7 days. Probably less:

It means that next year the other tournament  will take place during the week following the Shanghai (HSBC Champions) tournament.

E.g., in typical golf tournament scheduling, the Shanghai (HSBC Champions) tournament could end on a Sunday, and the other could start on the next Thursday.

Can you explain how you interpret this to be during/less than a week/ 7 days

The sentence says that it IS a week after. Not IN the week after

Please let me know your thoughts

 Thanks

This is how golf tournaments go, Thursday to Sunday.  Read your sports.

They should have said:

This tournament (golf) next year is THE week after the Shanghai (HSBC Champions) tournament...

However, you have  a point:

If one counts from the START of  first tournament to the START of the 2nd, it would be a week (7 days), from a Thursday to the next Thursday.

My reading in the above was from the END of the  1st to the START oft the 2nd (Sunday to next Thusday).

 But the original sentence says:

This tournament (golf) next year is A (NOT THE) week after the Shanghai (HSBC Champions) tournament...

My interpretation is that it will start 1 week (in 7 days) after the previous tournament - although it is not clear if it will start 7 days after the previous tournament started or ended. I would presume that it will start 7 days after the previous tournament started.
