Which is the correct word for this pattern?

This room is 5 meters long by/and 3 meters wide.

Both are correct, but the "by" version is mostly used in technical documents. If a ten-years-old kid says "My dad's room is 9 meters long by 6 meters wide", people might feel uneasy.
