my solution....

the following night 2 guys turn up to the hotel and pay $30 ( $15 each) again the clerk makes the same mistake an realzied the prize should be $ 25, so again he sends the bellhop down to give them the $5 . the bellhop realizing he got away with it last time trys it again this time, however intending to pocket $3  and giving the guys $2 dollars. so he gives $1 back to each friend, so 15- 1 equals $14 payed each so that amounts to $28 and we know that the bellhop kept the $3 to himself so.....

$28 + $3 =    $31  !!!!

THERES THE MISSING DOLLAR

Ignoring the mistake and the bellhop's thievery, the 3 friends paid 25 dollars.
25/3 = 8.33 each. If they each get a dollar back then they paid 9.33

9.33 multiplied by 3 = 28

30-28 = 2$ (which is the amount that the bellhop stole.)

VOILA! im a genius.

I'm not an accountant, but the puzzle would be a bean counter's worst nightmare.

You are counting monies on both sides of the equation (or balance sheet). You need to separate the credits and debits.

The three men are down $9

The Bellhop is up $2

The hotel is also up $25

the down = the up, thats all that matters

OK, as I sound a bit of a spoilsport, I'll post one of my own.

Answer to The Missing Dollar The answer is in the way the question is worded. You cannot add what one person HAS to what someone else has PAID and come up with any kind of a meaningful number, you have to subtract.
Each man has paid $9.
The bellhop has $2.
Difference
$9 x 3 = $27
   2
$25
The hotel clerk has the other 25 dollars.

To look at it from the standpoint of the original $30.

Each man has $1.
The bellhop has $2.
The hotel clerk has $25.
Total
$1 x 3 = $3
2
 25
$30

Room rent Pr night is 25

Amout Taken by the Room Boy: 2

Amount Returned to the Guest    3

For Each person it cost  9.33 ;9.*** =27.99

Room Boy                                          = 2.00

Initially each man paid 10 dollars (10x3=30)  for the room and each man received one dollar back from the bell boy.  Thus each man paid 9 dollars and the bell boy kept 2 dollars... 9x3=27+2=29.  This is an awsome riddle.  Any problem that works one way should always work itself back.
