Could someone please offer a good, general, all-purpose definition of "modal," as we use it here?

Many thanks,   - A.

Wiki has a good definition in WIctionary as well as Wiki itself. . Also see auxilliary verb.

Thanks, Ms. Stars.  Those are helpful.  Yet it seems I hear the term also used when auxilliaries are not involved.  I don't have examples at the moment.  I was hoping for something more general.  Perhaps I'm mistaken.

Thanks again,  - A.
