I'm totally confused because I've never heard of any rule saying that the verb "to be" and modals have to be before the adverb. Is there really susch a rule or is it just a matter of emphasis? 	CalifJim  +  782053 Tue, 16 Jun 09 09:13 PM The position immediately following the first operator is typical for an adverb. Forms of be, do, and have are considered operators.  Modals are, too. It is simply the best computer we have. But adverb position is not usually strictly fixed, and you will also hear variants such as yours: It simply is the best computer we have.
