And I didn't hear "It was as simple as..." because the final part of "simple" sounds kind of whispered to me, compared to the rest of the sentence. I also hear "It was as simple as the boss said..." The intonation seems OK to me. It seems to me he stresses the word "in" simply to highlight the difference (from vs in).
