I frequent another forum where this type of list would be closed almost immediately.  I see no reason for its being here, either.  Sorry!

I bet if you master the most common words, you will improve your English greatly. Another forum closed because of that, they didn't know what they were doing. Go ahead terminate this post based up what you saw on another forum, it will give me great pleasure to see that.

Because of these most common words, almost each of them has many different meanings,  one will improve their English drastically if they fully understand them.  It is from my point of view.

How many words do you think would be needed for an "adequate" list, BW2/3?
You can google many lists of "the most commonly used words in English". Here is one example:
http://esl.about.com/library/vocabulary/bl1000_list1.htm

The first page of that list claims to consist of the top 250 words. Is that enough in your opinion?
What about a list of 1000 words? 3000?

I agree with you that knowing the various meanings of words will help yourEnglish. However, there are many other aspects of language that are also important.
Mohammad Ahsan Ali gave a very good example of one of those aspects: "I'm fine, thank you.  And you?"  It's very useful to also learn standard collocations, phrases and sentences, for example.

By the way, neither 'fine' nor 'thank' appears in the list of the top 250 words (above).
