Dear Madame / Sir

With this letter i wish initiate my application for a PhD position in the ****** from the University of *************
I believe my motivation for applying for this position can be better understood considering my  study path so far.
After ending my initial degree in ****** i decided to pursue master studies in ******** . My goal was to have some international experience in a challenging environment in order to find out if i was capable and interested in pursuing a research career. Despite some initial setbacks, in the end the experience proved to be extremely worth it. It is true that this was only a small step in comparison to the one i want to take now but this thoughtful decision proved to be one of the most important of my life. This master, allowed me to develop my studies with some of the best scientists in their area and the final project gave me the initial flavour into a research project increasing my curiosity to be involved in a large project. During this year i manage to adapt to a new country and new teaching and working style and nevertheless finishing my degree in exactly one year time being the only from my program.
Coming to ********* was a challenge on a professional level but most especially on a personal level. I had the opportunity to be in contact, to work and to live with people from innumerable countries and cultures. I was conscious that i could work in multicultural and multi-ethnic teams but the possibility to really confirm it daily was undoubtedly rewarding.
Having finish my MSc and after evaluating the experience it was clear for me the path i would like to follow.
I start searching for a PhD project in an area where i could apply my knowledge in applied mathematics and scientific computing to real and concrete problems but at the same time have the opportunity to learn a new subject in science and not only deepen my understanding on my own field. My preference was directed to studies related to ************ and *********, in particular, because is a special motivating area for me but also because it allows me to complement my previous and more abstract education with real life problems. Moreover, i was specifically searching for an open vacancy with a somehow structured project, since without a deep insight on such subject it would be difficult to build up and structure my own research project.
My search run trough universities worldwide from Norway to Australia but either the projects were too focus on certain subjects cutting all possibilities of interdisciplinarity either not appealing enough. The project in “ ******** ” definitely grab my attention. It seemed to perfectly fit my parameters, a climate focus project broad enough to allow interdisciplinarity and the perfect complement between my interests and my background.
Moreover, the possibility of learning and working in one of the best schools in Europe for ******** and in one of the leading universities was definitely a plus.
I have given myself enough time to be conscious of the challenge this represents on a personal level and to be sure i was willing to commit entirely. I have also carefully considered my knowledge and my capacities as objectively as possible and found the answer to be an unconditional 'yes'.
I am aware that i don't have background in ***** or *********, that the first times will be specially hard and that i will need to work seriously to compensate this gap. Nevertheless, I don't see this only as a setback but as the unique opportunity to have a brand new perspective to problems without conditioning from previous mental structures. I find myself in the position where i am able to combine the best of both worlds, on one hand the problem solving training gained from my previous degrees and on the other hand the ability to look to the specific ******** problems with a new look.
From my part i have no doubts in my motivation for this project. I'm a commited and hard-working person and I believe that I am a good candidate for this PhD project.

Enclosed you will find all required documents for the PhD program. Thank you for taking the time to consider my application. I eagerly await your decision.

Faithfully Yours,
Mistic

Hi Mystic. I've made a few corrections for you in blue and you need to re-work areas highlighted in yellow. You are going to go through and capitalise all your 'I's aren't you? You might want to include some information on 'why that country'.
