I thought the movie story was about chemical weapon dealing and IMF agents averted the villain to do that.

Is the above sentence correct?

movie story is unnecessary.  Just movie is enough.

I don't think you mean averted.  Do you mean urged?  Do you mean prevented from?

: to turn away or aside (as the eyes) in avoidance
2 : to see coming and ward off : AVOID <avert disaster>

to do that at the end is unclear.  The word choice is too general and vague to fit with the rest of the sentence.

How about this?
I thought the movie was about trafficking in chemical weapons and how IMF agents prevent this kind of illegal activity.
