Go to the movies and go to church

Le matin, je vais à l'église.

1.In the morning, I go to church.

L'apres-midi, je vais à la plague.

2.In the afternoon, I go to the beach.

Le soir, je vais au cinéma.

3. In the evening, I go to the movies.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is my understanding that we don't say 'go to the church' because it is a traditional or ritual habit. If the person goes to church every morning to pray or any other religious activity, we won't say every morning he/she goes to the church.

Now in the second and third sentences you find the article 'the'.

Even if the person goes to movies or beaches as a habit, we still use the article 'the'.

I find this awkward. Your thoughts are welcome.

[French behaves differently. You can't drop the article.  L'église, la plague and au cinema is a must.]

à + le =  au

à + les = aux

à + la =  There is no contraction.

à + l' =  There is no contraction.

Hi Rex

This has been discussed before. If you go to a divine service, no article is used:

He goes to church regularly.
But: I met him at the church. (You think of the building rather than a service.)

In more or less the same way:

He still goes to school. (student)
I'll meet my son's teacher at the school today.

He is in jail/prison. (prisoner)
He workd at the jail.

He is in hospital (BrE) / in the hospital. (AmE) (patient)
He works at the hospital.  (Or: at a hospital if there are many.)

There are other similar words.

Cheers

Thanks Cool Breeze
I hope today you are enjoying Mid Summer in Finland .

I know we say he is in prison, he is in hospital, etc.

In the case you go to movies everyday like you go to church, you don't drop the article.

He goes to church.  [ Well he goes there everyday to pray.]

He goes to the movies. [ Though he goes to movies everyday the way he goes to church, we don't drop the article.]

Rex, you'll just have to live with the peculiarities of English!Smile [:)]

The sun is out and will set at 10.50PM in Helsinki. In northern Finland it won't set until the end of July. Tens of thousands of bonfires will light the nighless sky on the shores of 188,000 lakes at midnight today. It's time to relax and frolic!
