Just the accidents of history. Perhaps it is made
the way beer is made. Words often take their meanings from the other
words around them! Root beer is a compound noun.
A sea lion is not a lion.
A prairie schooner is not a schooner.
A Guinea pig is not a pig.
A Super Bowl is not a bowl.
Root beer is not beer.
