The deepening of the reform and new leaps in economy are all in urgent need of science and quality personnel to back up. This has provided a challenge as well as an opportunity for lace>laceName>FuzhoulaceName> laceType>UniversitylaceType>lace>, a university of science and engineering, concentrating mainly on engineering, the only local university of its type in tate>lace>Fujianlace>tate>. To keep pace with the reform and the rapid economic development in the province, lace>laceName>FuzhoulaceName> laceType>UniversitylaceType>lace> is now on its development fast lane. The past forty years, esp. the past 20 years, have seen the number of students registered jump from less than 2000 in 1975 to more than 10000 today and specialties offered cover almost all economic and industrial sectors and fields in the province. A variegated pattern of school running has been created which includes graduate education, undergraduate education, short 2-to-3 year higher education program, adult education and education programs for oversea students. Since the start of the reform in the late 1970s, Fijian province has taken full advantage of the special policies offered by Chinese central government in its system reforms.  As a result, the market-oriented reform has achieved substantial progress, giving a big push to the development of the provincial economic and social undertakings. This, however, poses a great challenge as well as a great opportunity to Fuzhou University, which is the only provincial university focusing on engineering, combined with science.
