Non-native speakers at TESOL teachers?

Just out of interest, do you know anyone who is a TESOL teacher and not a native speaker? And if so, how are they doing? What do you think about it?

Sure, there are lots of them, Tommy. They do quite well, They are an important part of the teaching teams in commercial language schools here, and are the most important part of teaching teams in the public school system.

Hi TommyT,

I know several such teachers, and they are all very good at what they do. Some people think that non-native teachers are somehow less qualified to teach a language than are native speakers, but I disagree. A language teacher should be an expert in the language and in language teaching. You don't need to be a native speaker to meet those criteria.
