Due to the sex scandal, the NewYork senator who used to be popular because of his efforts in cracking down on prostitution rings is now a fallen star.

Can someone please rephrase the italicized phrase? I feel it's unnatural but have no idea how to correct (naturalize?) it.

By the way, can I use naturalize ?

Thanks!

It sounds ok but this is more concise

be popular because of his crack-down on prostitution rings

(He was the governor, not a senator.)

Barbara, who answers in American English. This is my kitten - she's cute for someone with a direct lineage to Satan.

Thanks for the correction. I don't follow politics but am trying to change that.
