Robert Craig, the author of The Face We Put On: Carl Jung for Teachers, uses Jung's concept to emphasize the notion of how every individual tend to behave in one way to the public, while this conduct is not revealing who they really are. Jung is fundamentally stating that this act of people hiding behind a certain façade can be described as putting on a different face or mask in different junctures. According to Jacobi (1976), “When we are alone we need no mask, but the more we share our existence with others, the more vital a mask becomes” (p.34). The manner in which each person interacts with one another is exceptionally diverse. For instance, our actions and communication towards our parents and our peers evidently fluctuate.
Sometimes, this mask-wearing becomes a part of us and, therefore, will likely prevent us from human growth development. Consequently, we become convinced that we are who we had shaped ourselves into and that the mask is really our own persona, rather than confessing to merely being labeled.
It is inevitable, however, for us not to wear the mask because it is a "defense against intrusion and manipulation."
People had taken a stance in wearing the mask at some point in their life. Mostly in their adult stage of life because they have realized that they need to have a different face mask when they go out of their house. One of the famous proverbs, “ ‘Outside a saint, at home a devil’”( Jacobi 1976, p. 35) Jacobi says. This mask can be acknowledged as a deceitful and mendacious scam to others. Sometimes people wear a happy face mask to cover up their feelings from their friends and family members. In reality, they are torn apart inside either from their struggling in academic, social, or romance lives.
“Mask interpretations are found most frequently in people who are at crossroad in their lives”(Jacobi 1976, p. 56). People who wear this type of mask are commonly those in the educational professions field. Most of the time, it is the title of being the teacher that persuades the instructor to maintain their role. They have to wear that in control face mask when they are in front of the students. If they don’t wear it, the students will think they are not strong enough to listen to. Sometime the teachers also have to wear that answer expert face mask because the students expect the teacher to know everything. In reality, the teachers are like the students they still learning from people.
