My answers are at the bottom, just after that little line in red.  I put the exercise without my answers ontop, and I placed my answers at the bottom. They are there.

  1. Hi,

  2. Here are some edits. I've deleted the ones where I agree with you.

  3. Best wishes, Clive

  4. MAKE ALL THE NECESSARY CORRECTIONS IN THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES.

A. Her favorite writers, Joyce Carol Oates and James Dickey, are both contemporary.

C.Since we had driven the car 87,000 kilometers, we decided to turn it in.

D. If "siege" is spelled with an “ie” why is "seize" spelled with an “ei”?

F. Many people, perhaps most people, do not know from what materials their clothing is made.

G. The government was faced with a difficult task. It had to persuade a sceptical, frustrated people that the energy shortage was real. Or you could use a semi-colon, as you noted.

J. The lawn, a little ragged, needs to be cut, the hedge, shrubs and ivy need to be trimmed, the flowers need to be watered and, not least of all, the gardener needs to be paid.

K. The late Will Rogers's favourite saying was, “I' ve never met a man I didn't like.”

  1. Does anyone remember who said 'Absolute power corrupts absolutely"?

N. I make it a point to read the New York Times every day and the New Yorker every week. Only rarely, however, do I get around to Time or Newsweek. You could use a semi-colon instead ot the period, but I wouldn't.

O. “You can't do that”, they shouted from the balcony, “you can't, you can't.”

P. The president's wife's activities are always reported in the press. So are his children's. You could use a semi-colon instead ot the period, but I wouldn't.

S. “Enjoy the view”, we called out as they left for the mountaintop. We had wisely decided to wait for them in the/a meadow, halfway up.

thanks. I had a few questions, or rather need clarification on a few things. “You can't do that”, they shouted from the balcony, “you can't, you can't.” ( Why is the comma outside the quote and not inside it?)

“Enjoy the view”, we called out as they left for the mountaintop. We had wisely decided to wait for them in the/a meadow, halfway up. (the same with this one?)

I make it a point to read the New York Times every day and the New Yorker every week. Only rarely, however, do I get around to Time or Newsweek. (Don't you usualy place a ; whenever there is a "however" being used?)

--Only rarely; however, do I..

Hi,

I had a few questions, or rather need clarification on a few things. “You can't do that”, they shouted from the balcony, “you can't, you can't.” ( Why is the comma outside the quote and not inside it?) It's a matter of the style you choose to follow. If you search the Forum, you'll find a number of threads that discuss such aspects of punctuation. And have a look here.  http://www.writersblock.ca/tips/monthtip/tipmay96.htm

(Don't you usualy place a ; whenever there is a "however" being used?) In this case, where there is a preceding adverb, a semi-colon would be totally incorrect.

I believe you may be thinking of a case like this. He loved her; however, he didn't marry her.

But note that the above sentence would much more commonly written as He loved her. However, he didn't marry her.

Best wishes, Clive
