Please kndly correct the following:

1) Do I have to put "the" here? 

 a) in the two places indicated

 b) Yesterday, I went to a funeral; there, (the) men ate on (the) one side and (the) women on the other.

2) And here,

a) yes

b) the men ate on one side and the women on the other (although it reads quite well with no 'the's' but this sentence sounds better)
