A nerd is a slang word.

A nerd is typically a male who usually does not have very many friends, especially girl friends. He is always with his computer or his books. He does not dress well.  Bill Gates is sometimes described as a nerd.

In my book you can hardly call Bill Gates a nerd, I would describe him as a computer geek, but never a nerd.

Just my two cents

"Social misfit" might be one way to describe it, although the general idea is that nerds are very intelligent, which not every misfit is.

There's a very silly movie called "Revenge of the Nerds" that would show you a panoply of nerds if you really wanted to research the topic.
