Does it mean that Mike and his father had similar characters, but when his father was dying they started to understand each other better, they came closer to each other, they were calmer (peace)? He was nervous in case his son was not born during those 5 days, because those were the only days in which he could be present at the birth. Mike was sitting at his father's bed. I think that, as much as he was possibly given the character of his father, there was a sense of closure and peace and things being brought to some kind of understanding between them. Does it mean that Mike and his father had similar characters, but when his father was dying they started to understand each other better, they came closer to each other, they were calmer (peace)? That seems to be the idea,but it's awkwardly expressed. I wonder if there is a type or error of some kind in the quoted words?  eg as much as possible, given the character of his father would have a different meaning and seem more natural.
