Hi there,

My colleague is a native English speaker. He always says I speak English with neutral accent. What is meant by 'neutral accent? Does he mean I have accent, or I speak bad English?

He means that you have no strong accent reminiscent of any particular regional English.  I'd call it a compliment, overall.

Hi there,

Thanks a lot. Do you mean 'reminiscent of any ...' ? Can I use the word 'trace' ?

An accent is the manner in which an individual speaks a language. It's just a matter of learning. An accent that is understood by all in the international community, no matter who the listener is.This is called Neutral Accent.

English is a language that uniquely has no set accent. If you travel around the world and visit countries and regions that speak English as a first language, you will be amazed at the variety of accents spoken by "true" English speakers. The reality is that English is English as long as you make yourself understood by English speakers.Neutral accent is something that represents Globally understandable English.
