Although the thief was caught, I never recovered the money he stole from me.

Hi,

Can I replace "recovered" in the above with "get back//retrieve" without making a change in meaning? Thanks.

Get back is OK; retrieve is not.

Thanks, Mister.

But could you explain in a few words why retrieve doesn't work?
