I ask because the use of commas in the examples struck me as odd. I typically place commas 'by ear,' and while the sentence "I went to the movies, but the film I wanted wasn't playing" reads as right because I could chop that into two sentences (I went to the movies. The film I wanted wasn't playing.) I can't do that type of mental parsing with "Grace not only likes helping people, but she also likes talking care of little animals."      M.
