J. S. Mill wrote:

"(...) And I denounce and reprobate this pretension not the less, if put forth on the side of my most solemn convictions."

1. What does "not the less" mean?

2. Would you please rewrite the red clause as a simple one, so that I can understand it a little more clearly?

Thank you so much.

none the less/nonetheless = in spite of that

In addition to what milky said,

Mill opposes and disapproves of "this pretension," even if the "pretension" is used to support what he strongly believes.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

not the less isn't none the less

"(...) And I denounce and reprobate this pretension not the less, if put forth on the side of my most solemn convictions."

Mill wants to say, IMO, that:

I will not denounce and reprobate such opinions to a lesser extent if they are some of my own deeply felt convictions.
