In the sentence:
I live in the United States.
Is the word United an adjective or is "United States" a noun ?
How about:
I live in the United States of America.
Is "United States of America" the noun or is it an adjective, noun, preposition, etc.
Finally:
Mary put her crayon in the pencil box.
Is pencil an adjective or is "pencil box" the noun ?

'United States (of America)' as a unit is a proper noun, the name of the country. 'United' is an adjective, and 'of America' is a prepositional phrase (with 'America' its noun object) serving as an adjective.
'Pencil' is a noun serving as an adjective to modify the noun 'box'.
