In the sentence, The abolitionist John Brown referred to her as "General Tubman"

 

how is General Tubman being used?

 

The obvious choice might be a noun, but I'm thinking an adjective that is modifying her.

 

Also, when quoting something that has quotes in it, how do you write it?
