When writing numbers, is it okay to spell them out or put them in their number form?

example:

I'm so tired. I just wrote 3 pages worth of essay material.

Hi,

It's really a matter of style.

Generally speaking, in formal writing for this example, spell out 'three'. But I wouldn't spell out 579,327.

Best wishes, Clive

I somehow have it in the back of my head that two digits (or words) can be spelled out.  After that, it's #'s.  "Three hundred", but 305.  "One thousand", but 1001.  "Fourteen" but 14½.  This "rule" generally provides for "clean copy".
