What is difference between object and complement ?

1# Adam saw the monkey.

2# Adam saw the monkey jumping.

In both #1 and #2,  "monkey" is object.

In #2, jumping is object complement, because describes the object "monkey".

So, to answer your question, a verb acts on the object, and complement describes the object.
