Dear all - please contact me if you're interested in more personalised information and some idea of how to prepare, but here is some information.

Indeed, as our moderator has pointed out, all this information is available on the OET website http://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/Display.aspx?tabid=2411- but for quick reference - here is an overview and the next lot of dates:-

The Occupational English Test (OET) is a language test for overseas qualified health professionals. The Test assesses the English language proficiency as it is used in medical and health professions. The OET is administered by the OET Centre six times a year and in over 40 locations around the world. The Test measures the language competency of health professionals who are seeking registration and the ability to practice in an English-speaking context. It is designed to ensure that language competency is assessed in a relevant professional context.

Currently the OET tests the following professions

Pharmacy

The Occupational English Test

The OET will be administered six times in 2008. We test in over 40 locations around the world.

The OET is made up of four sub-tests: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking. The Listening and Reading sub-tests are common to all candidates. You take different Writing and Speaking sub-tests depending on your profession. All test materials are returned to Melbourne to be assessed. After assessment is completed, the data is analysed, highlighting any re-marking required. In this way, the OET Centre rigorously confirms all results before they are published. You cannot request re-marking of any sub-test.

LISTENING

Time allowed: About 50 minutes
For this sub-test you listen to a recording in two parts. Part A is a consultation between a health professional and a patient. You are required to take notes under given headings. Part B is a lecture on a health-related issue. There is a range of listening tasks to complete. Pauses in the recording allow you time to write the answers. The Listening sub-test is marked by assessors who receive comprehensive training before each administration.

READING

Time allowed: 60 minutes
This sub-test contains two texts on health-related issues. You are required to answer between 10 and 14 multiple choice questions per text, recording your answers on a special answer sheet. The answer sheet is scanned by computer and the data analysed.

WRITING

Profession specific
Time allowed: 45 minutes (including 5 minutes of reading time)
For this sub-test, you are required to write a response to case notes or other information provided. The response required is usually in the form of a referral or transfer letter. You should write around 180 to 200 words. Two assessors independently mark each writing script.

SPEAKING

Profession specific
Time allowed: 25 minutes
For the Speaking sub-test you take your professional role in two separate roleplays with an interviewer. The whole interview, including a brief warm-up session, is recorded. Two assessors independently mark each speaking recording
.

Dear all

I've just put a whole heap of info on the OET on my previous post, but I also wanted to add this important information for nurses:-

Here in Queensland, Australia, there are 3 choices for NESB-

1. OET

2. IELTS - you need a score of 7.5, which seems unattainable for some - I had a German student who had already nursed in a paedeatric ward in London for 2 years and whose spoken English was fluent, and whose health and nursing vocabulary was that of British nurses obviously, but who took a long time to prepare for her IELTS test.

3. ISLPR - International second Language Proficiency Rating - this test is becoming more popular as it tests only on authentic texts and gives the candidates an opportunity to give most responses verbally - so a lot more natural and real, but of course more open to interpretation.  It's used for teachers and police extensively now in Queensland, and for nurses in New South Wales - Sydney capital.  http://www.islpr.org/

I hope this helps some of you.

As stated in my last post, email me directly if you need more personalised info/help

Kind regards

Ruth
