Can you, please, check it?

Should I replave ''characteristics'' with ''properties'' in the context? Is ''oil field'' ok?

Chemical composition and physical characteristics/properties of oil vary according to certain oil fields. The value of oil depends primarily on the content of light fractions (petrol, petroleum and gas oil) and on the amount of sulphur. The more light fractions there are and the less sulfur there is, the oil is more valuable.

Both are fine, but properties is a more 'chemical' word, and that's what I would choose.  Certain is odd, and I have deleted it and adjusted the phrase.  I have also fixed the parallelism of the the more...the more clause.

Sorry, Mr Micawber and I posted more or less at the same time but It looks like we've said almost exactly the same.

Just the one about properties/characteristics is different. I originally put properties but then changed it to characteristics since the variation from one oil-field to another are not just its colour, viscosity etc but also the amount of water, sludge, degree of emulsification and others which don't fit into the idea of physical properties. It's a fine line and I wouldn't argue too strongly in favour of one or the other - both are reasonably suitable to me.

I think i can improve on your middle sentence.   See what you think...

The value of oil primarily depends on the recoverable content of the lighter fractions ( those used for petrol, petroleum and gas oils) and on the sulphur content.

The more lighter fractions present and less sulphur content, makes the oil more valuable.
