Athletes are sponsored by different organizations, some belong to the government. Therefore, saying that sports and politics have nothing in common is misleading. The reason that athletes dream to participate in the Olympics because of fame and wealth they would get out of it if they won a medal. Is it right to see other humans are dying and here you are worrying about their fame and wealth????

You (or other people who try to boycott Olympics) are trying to dictate the Chinese goernment what to do in their own countries. And involve politics in everything. It reminds me of the US policy in Iraq.

Dew, you are turning it upside down. If I express my attitude by boycotting, it means that I won't be present at the Olympic games. By no means do I dictate the Chinese governement what to do. The only effect it can have, is that Chinese government will miss me at the Olympic games and will start to think about the reason why I didn't come. I don't force them to do anything.

The more people will boycott the Olympic Games, the more will they cause the Chinese government to think about their image in foreign states. But they cannot change the behaviour of the Chinese governent-China is a sovereign state. The only harmful outcome can be that the Olympic games will be without politics, who will thereby demonstrate their attitude to Chinese style of politics. I don't see any reason why sportsmen should boycott the Olympic Games - Chinese do not need sportsmen to come (they have their own sport stars), they need politics, because they want to demonstrate their political power and their position in world's politics.

Let's clear. You don't like about human rights or no freedom of press in China,  so you think it is sufficient to boycott the 2008 Olympic.

I don't know who your words are directed at but you have misunderstood the ideas expressed in this thread completely. No one has said the athletes should boycott the Beijing Olympics. I have said twice that no athlete should be required to boycott the olympics. I am all for the athletes' going to Beijing. I recommend participating in the games and demonstrating peacefully against the human rights violations in China. Amnesty International thinks this is the best policy as well.

The International Olympic Committee knew when it assigned the 2008 Olympics to Beijing that there would be very little improvement in China's policies regarding political dissidents etc. We'll just have to live with that. Demonstrations may not do much good to improve things in China but they certainly won't worsen the situation either. And they make one point crystal clear: the free world considers China's policies despicable.

Several heads of state have already said they won't be attending the Opening Ceremony, among them the presidents of France and Finland. That may not matter a great deal as the Chinese will never be able to read such news in the newspapers. In a truly dictatorial fashion, all news like that is carefully banned in the Chinese media.

I quite agree about demonstrating peacefully. Peaceful action will attract more attention and they can make a stronger influence.

The same with the attitude to the demonstrations.

I think we should ask our Chinese friends about the Chinese press. I think your information is about 10 years old...
Respect to everyone.

My information is about 10 days old. There have been demonstrations in countries where the Olympic Flame has been so far. These include Greece, England and the USA. Read about it here, for example. None of this has been reported in China. I don't need to ask anyone about it. I already know it because Finnish correspondents working in China have mentioned in their reports that there is nothing about the demonstrations in the Chinese media.

Of course there are other countries where such news is kept hidden as well for various reasons.

I don't know whether you are hinting at Russia if you say that there are countries where such informations is hidden... (We watch  all the news from around the world) and I also watched some reports from China where Chinese people were very much upset aboput the actions against the Olympic flame...

Perhaps some information in Finland is hidden from the people as well...

Smile  Read about the level of press freedom here. Finland 5th, Russia 144th. If something isn't mentioned in the press, it's because the journalists think it's not newsworthy. If there has been news in the Finnish press about the Chinese being upset about demonstrations , it must have escaped my attention. I am going to keep a watchful eye on any news from China from now on. If the rulers let the people know about the demonstrations, that is good news.
