Hi

There was a guy who pretended to be Mr X and someone said that he was definitely on a bit of a roll as Mr X. And than he adds: It was such an all encompassing thing that he was playing this man.

--- Does it mean he was popular as this guy, people liked that?

--- What can be hidden behind the words "all encompassing" thing?

"On a roll" means enjoying a period of uninterrupted success. Not sure of the origin but I'd guess dice games.

I'd take "all encompassing" here to mean that the guy had fully entered into the role of Mr. X, more intensely so than merely playacting a part. For example, he might begin thinking as Mr. X would think, choosing food that Mr. X would choose, etc. An old story springs to mind about the (white) actor who blacked himself all over to play Othello.
