My question relates to the use of the words "on" and "upon" Is it correct to say "I relied on your good sense to solve the problem." or "I relied upon your good sense to solve the problem." I know one "lays a book on the table" but does one "rest an argument on a reliable source" or "upon a reliable source?" Thank you.

On and Upon are the same, the difference lies in the usage. Upon is associated with the ' noun in action ', that's the gerund or something you think is not static.
