These shoes only cost £20

Is it correct to say "These shoes cost only £20"? The latter sentence seems better to me but I came across the frist.

Thanks

"These shoes cost only £20" is correct. Only refers to the price and not to the verb.

"This bird only flies with one wing."
(The bird flies with one wing. It does not stir paint or do anything else with that wing).

"This bird flies with only one wing."
(The bird manages to fly with one wing but it would fly better with two).

Hi,

You might also want to look at this position for 'only'.

Only these shoes cost $20 (all the other shoes cost $50)

The correct answers already having been given my predecessors, it remains only to mention that:

These shoes only cost £20

Is a sentence common in speech and advertising, as are many similar.  If the meaning is clear, no harm done.
