Both are possible, but you probably want 'open', which expresses the condition of the gate.  'Opened' expresses the action.

Thegate was open or opened?

The gate was open means that it was not closed.

I opened the gate this morning means that the gate was opened by me this morning.

What about this one?

As soon as the gate was open/opened, the crowd rushed in.

As soon as the gate was opened (by somebody), the crowd rushed in.

If "open" expresses the condition and "opened" expresses the action, why can't that be applied to close/closed?

The gate is close.

The gate is closed (by someone).

Any idea why?

Historical accident, and probably not easily traced out, but the adjective evidently came first in the case of 'open'-- thereby precluding the -ed adjective, while 'closed' appeared in the more usual way.

The gate is close. NOT CORRECT. (The gate is closed. = The gate is not open.)
The gate is closed (by someone). (Fine. The word 'closed' is used as a verb.)

Any idea why?
