he chose oranges because the bright orange color of the orange will stand out in comparison to the dark grey of december. also, the bright orange represents fire- and fire represents passion. (you'd say im burning with passion rather than i'm freeezing with passion)

this poem is about young love and knowing how it once felt. Soto is telling you to remember about your first love and how you felt. The orange is an extended metphore of money, love, passion, and fire...the list goes on. When he talks about the "porch light burning day and night" it is a symbolic representation of his burning passion for her. The line about the "used car lot" and the "newly planted trees" is imagery about his reality and what kind of life he lives. this is what the poem is about. As well as having alliteration in the begining. The "W" are alliterated to give a visual of how cold the december wind is. The "B" that is alliterated also shows the coldness of the night. if you read this please refer to it. These other "interpretaions" are guesses and in no way refer to the poem.

Don't you suppose the oranges are the fiery, unbearable brightness of new-blossoming love?
